Recorded Webinar Mentorship Program Kickoff
Published October 27, 2026 by Elsie Gallegos in
“Mentorship is one of the purest forms of care – when no one is paid to care”.
This thought from James Michael Lafferty stayed with us after our P&G Alumni Mentorship Program kickoff conversation.
That’s part of what makes mentorship so meaningful: someone choosing to invest their time, share their experience, and help another person grow, with the reward being the satisfaction of seeing someone else succeed.
James shared honest, real-life examples from both sides of mentorship – as a mentor and as a mentee – and what makes these relationships truly valuable.
One thing that stood out was the importance of honesty. Mentors need to be willing to give honest feedback, and mentees need to be open to receiving it, even when it’s uncomfortable and challenges their perspective in a big way.
James also shared a good reminder to embrace life as a whole, including the parts we would not necessarily choose. Life doesn’t come with only the ingredients we like. He compared it to minestrone: you get ingredients you love and others you don’t. You can’t pick only your favorites or obsess over the ones you like least – you have to eat the soup.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us live, and to the dozens more who requested the recording afterwards. It’s encouraging to see this conversation reaching beyond the room.
Thank you, James Michael Lafferty, for sharing your experience so openly, it was an honor to interview you, and to everyone helping bring the P&G Alumni Mentorship Program to life.
For those who like catching the last train: mentee applications are still open for a little while longer. Grab one of the last spots and apply now!

Bob Gilbreath: Leading with Love, Not Fear

Bob Gilbreath is a longtime friend of the Pod, fellow P&G Alum, and repeat startup founder with two exits. In this episode, we revisit Bob’s case for a different kind of leadership — one built on love rather than fear.
Bob Gilbreath is a longtime friend of the Pod, fellow P&G Alum, and repeat startup founder with two exits. In this episode, we revisit Bob’s case for a different kind of leadership — one built on love rather than fear. Prompted by a comment from a fellow leader that “people need at least some fear, or they won’t do their work,” Bob challenges a conventional assumption about what motivates people and gets the best out of them. Drawing on his experience building companies and his own personal evolution, Bob explores how letting go of fear and leading with love can create greater financial and emotional benefits. It’s a thoughtful reflection on the kind of leaders we want to be, and the kinds of organizations we want to build.

Chapter's Corner: A Place Nearby
Where You Belong

James Black, Chair of the New York Chapter of the P&G Alumni Network, worked at Procter & Gamble in Brand Management for more than seven years in Cincinnati from 2003 to 2010.
Three Tips from the New York Chapter on how to grow membership:
-
Strengthen how to articulate the value proposition of the Network so people want to be active. In the New York Chapter we focus on 3 C’s:
- Content–e.g. AI
- Careers–panels to help people explore their next acts
- Community–socials and community service
-
Determine what assets can be provided to the Chapters–e.g., speakers from Cincinnati would be a plus to drive connectivity
-
Leverage “shared interests” –for the NY Chapter, alumni in “tech” would be a powerful source
